Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure practiced in the United States today. Every year, over 350,000 women undergo this procedure. However, that does not mean that breast enlargement surgery is right for you. You should carefully consider many factors before taking the irrevocable step of having breast augmentation surgery done.
There are three main classes of women who are seeking Breast Augmentation:
- Women who never developed adequate breast tissue
- Women who had adequate breasts but found they shrank and/or began to sag after childbirth and/or breastfeeding
- who have what might be considered "normal" breasts, but would like more for personal reasons.
If you fit into any of these categories, you are a candidate for breast augmentation surgery. Whether you are a good candidate for breast enhancement is slightly more complicated. In order to determine this, you must consider factors in your medical history. If you have any of the following, breast enhancement may not be advisable:
- A family history of breast cancer
- A personal history of autoimmune diseases such as HIV, scleroderma, lupus, or fibromyalgia
- Any other chronic disease or condition that might impair your body's ability to heal or make you more susceptible to infection or other risks
- A history of mental illness
Make sure you discuss any and all of these factors with your cosmetic surgeon before you decide to go ahead with your breast enhancement surgery. Even if they do not prevent you from having the surgery, they may affect the type of implant, the placement of the implant, and the type of incision used for implantation.
And, of course, if you decide to have breast enlargement surgery, you should make sure and select the right cosmetic surgeon to work with.
